Personal branding starts long before you post on social media

There’s a lot of talk about personal branding these days.

Scroll through social media and you’ll find endless advice about posting more, building your profile, and ‘putting yourself out there’.

But here’s the problem: many people start at the end, not the beginning.

A strong brand starts with strong foundations

Successful influencers don’t have powerful personal brands because they became successful influencers – it’s the other way round.

They became successful because they had already built a strong sense of identity – they knew who they were, what they stood for, and what made them different.

You wouldn’t build a house without strong foundations.

As we all learned from the three little pigs, if your house isn’t built on something solid, it doesn’t matter how impressive it looks – it won’t stand for long.

The foundations of a personal brand

So, what do we mean by ‘foundations’?

It’s not your logo, your colour palette, or your social media strategy.
It’s the inner work – the definition of who you are – that underpins everything you put into the world.

Your foundations are built from knowing:

  • Your values: what truly matters to you
  • Your strengths: what you do best
  • Your vision: where you’re heading and why it matters
  • Your personality: the unique energy and style that make you, you

When you’ve done this work, you have a clear sense of identity – a strong, authentic base that gives direction and confidence to everything you do next.

Only then can you communicate with consistency and purpose – in your social media posts, job applications, networking conversations, and professional presence.

Without these foundations, your personal brand can feel scattered and uncertain.
But when you build from self-knowledge, every interaction becomes more authentic, more believable, and more you.
